The chat system is not something I've ever used because of the plethora of alternative chat solutions out there. I'd like to hear from people who use chat in ClockingIT.

    * In what ways are you using it?
    * How is it more useful than using 'proper' standalone chat systems?
    * What sort of access control does it need (I don't want my customers knowing when I'm online and when I'm not)
    * What if we looked into integration with (say) XMPP rather than a web based chat system?

My motive is that I could potentially pull out chat completely from the software. That also removes Comet/Juggernaut, will speed up the application a bit (some Flash goes away), removes a major support headache (getting the push server to run), and let's me focus on other things like SVN/git integration.

But since I've never used it, I'm not sure if I'm pulling out something people just experiment a little with or use in a productive way. Please let me know.

I've been using clockingIT for about a year, and have used it a total of maybe 3 times, mostly saying to new clients "You can chat with me here if you need but I'd prefer you use MSN, email, or IRC."

I personally don't use it, but I also never use facebook's chat on the page, I use Digsby to keep all my IM services in one client, and that includes facebook.

What would be really cool is to integrate with jabber. That is, the ability to send notifications of new tasks to a group or user on chat, and even to open new tasks from chat would be really nice.

I'll add that to the general wishlist.

Do we have any users here who would miss the web based chat interface we have now?

I'm going to post here one more time, just to bring it to the top of the forums. If there isn't anyone who'll miss this, I'll start removing the code next week. This will be the first major feature removed by me from the codebase and so it cements the split between Erlend's old code still being used in the hosted environment, and the new directions I've been going in.

Erlend, do you have any comments about this direction, on whether you are still going to be implementing all the features you have marked as "planned" ( http://cit.uservoice.com/forums/14788-general ), and on how this change from me will affect the future of the project from your perspective?

We have disabled it, it is virtually useless with all the chat clients that already exist.

Erlend, do you have any thoughts about this direction or about the idea of splitting the fork from your hosted version in a more concrete way? That is, do you see the direction as a greater split or as a reconciliation between the branches?

Agreed, chat is interesting thing but it's useless for our team.

just joined and started using Clocking it. I would like chat to stay. I use it like a task tracker, note taker to myself. I suppose in a group envir having your own thought logic displayed might not be best, but you can always create new rooms for shared info. Being able to go back to see quickly what I was working on is very useful. I also see it as different than just an historical view of work done. It's what I chose to communicate be it to myself or others. Helps me stay focused. I also like your site because of the way you present various ways of showing tasks. Chat, would be nice to have on front overview (or call it something else, short one line notes) So far... a great product

Please kill Juggernaut. I've wasted far too much time attempting to appease it before realizing what it did. I have no need for chat. At a min. it would be great to have it be an optional install component that could be skipped.
