Hi,
After suffering for ten days, I found an error-proof way of doing this.
I created specifically this link for clockingit, if you follow the steps normally it will work fine.
It follows a couple of guides out there but with some useful precisions and additional commands.
Hope this should spare others a few headaches.

Fail to install Clocking IT [SOLVED]

Dear all:

I try my best but I cannot install Clocking IT.

I follow the "how-to" guide for Ubuntu 8.1 and 9.10 setup. Both of them are fail:

For 8.1 guide, everything installs ok but when I try to access in browser, it redirect to another website (http://www.searchfusion.com/). I check the server log, the server is running but don't know why the login page does not appear.

For 9.1 guide, I reach the problem when "ruby setup.rb". An error "undefined method `>' for :version:Symbol" occurs and I only get the same output in the browser.

Does anyone know what I am wrong? Thanks.

Installing Ari Branch on Ubuntu 9.10

Hi have updated the following notes. Hope it helps:


Installed Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 Server on VMWare Player 3.0 using Easy Install

	Username: cit
	Password: cit

Added "/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00proxy" to use a local mirror

	Acquire::http { Proxy "http://za.archive.ubuntu.com"; };

Installed the following packages

	sudo aptitude update
	sudo aptitude install openssh-server openssl apache2 apache2-threaded-dev mysql-server libmysqlclient15-dev imagemagick libmagick9-dev ruby-full rubygems rails build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) git-core libxslt-dev libxslt1.1
		I'm not 100% if we need all this packages
		
MySQL root password 

	Username: root
	Password: cit

Install ClockingIT

	cd /home/cit
	git clone git://github.com/ari/clockingit.git

Install Needed Ruby Gems 

	cd /home/cit/clockingit/
	sudo gem update
	sudo gem install rails mysql
	sudo rake gems:install
		This process takes really long
		
Setup MySQL Clocking IT user
	
	echo "CREATE USER 'cit'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'cit';" | mysql -u root -p mysql
	
Create the database and user for ClockingIT

	echo "CREATE DATABASE cit DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci; GRANT ALL ON cit.* TO 'cit'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'cit'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;" | mysql -u root -p
	
Setup Clocking IT

	cd /home/cit/clockingit/
	ruby setup.rb
		default options for eveything except make sure to load the DB schema when asked

Install mod_rails for Apache2

	sudo gem install passenger 
	sudo /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/passenger-install-apache2-module
	sudo nano /etc/apache2/mods-available/passenger.load
	
		LoadModule passenger_module /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-2.2.9/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so
		PassengerRoot /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/passenger-2.2.9
		PassengerRuby /usr/bin/ruby1.8

		^O to save ^X to quit nano
	
	sudo a2enmod

Configure Apache2

Differences between local download version and online version

Hi,

Are you sure that the downloadable version on github is the same as the online version ?
Because on the local version we've manage (finally!) to install, the layout is a bit different, and so do the menus : I have
no "browse" tab, I have three subtabs on a "tasks" tab menu : List/Schedule/Gantt. I do not have a "chat" tab. And, Last
but not least, i'm unable to find an "assigned to" droplist on the task edit window.

Though I'm sure I've grabbed the version on github few days ago,
is there something i'm missing ? SHould I go throught the upgrade process ?

Please let me know, since i've suffered the hell to install clockingit properly on our server and now it is almost unusable for
us due to that lack of important features.

iCal Feed Not Working?

Hi,

When checking the iCal feed with the ?mode=logs in Google calendar we only see time logged for tasks up to July this year - since then they appear to have stopped, even though there's been time recorded against tasks in both July and August. Any idea why this is happening?

The assignment of some tasks may of switched between projects during this period, but as far as I understand the iCal feed should list all work for all projects and users...?

First of all I wanted to say "thank you" to all ClockingIt developers! =)
My team and I, who are working on a game called open Outcast, were looking for a way to improve our task management and organization so ClockingIt seems to be the perfect solution.

Now the problem is, that we don't have a root server. Our hoster HAS Ruby and the other dependencies installed though and we can execute single ruby scripts. The only thing is that we can't execute them in interactive mode, entering the needed data directly etc.

Would it be possible to have some kind of batched installation? Like writing the needed stuff down in a file and running the setup with those values?

Download Database Dump is not working

Is it a bug? Is it happening only our "instalation" planb.clockingit.com

Email integration

Hi Guys...
have deployed clocking it on a centos 5.4, users have logged into it and have been using it. Its really awesome and have got a good response. Now would like to integrate emails into it so that when a task has been assigned to a user the user is notified for the same in outlook....

If anyone could help to configure it like which files i need to edit to feed in the mail server settings and the authentication user name and password.....
I am really stuck with it for quite some time.. i looked into the http://wiki.clockingit.com/wiki:source and tried the mail integration but wasn't able to do it...

could anyone please help me with mail integration.

File management

First let me say that your work is absolutly amazing. During the last 2 weeks I have tested a lot of free PMS and none gives enough possibilities compared to yours. I'm testing it because I want it adopted by my team. However, to do so I must prepare myself with some answers :
-Is it possible to make the files attached to one project (and thus invisible in the others ?)
-Can we tag the files so we can find them easily ?

Often I assign tasks to myself in this case it would also be best not to receive an email notification.
I would still like to receive notifications of tasks other people assign to me.

Create Task Problem

Hi There,

I have a local install on CentOS with a cPanel/WHM environment. My version of Ruby is 1.8.4 (unfortunatelly the last one from Yum).

I had the same bug as this topic http://forum.clockingit.com/discussion/863/new-installation-500-error-after-login/#Item_0 and I corrected it changing the code.

Now I have the same bug #1 from this topic http://forum.clockingit.com/discussion/854/problems-with-a-fresh-install/#Item_0

I just can't create tasks. Enabling Sendmail did't correct the problem for me (or I did something wrong when configuring it). Is there some piece of code that I can change as a workaround for this problem?

server becomes way too slow (Clockingit)

I've successfully installed ClockingIT for four local computers
everything works well but I have a problem with only one of them : When it
connects to Clockingit the server becomes way too slow and other computers cannot access clockingit anymore (way too
slow). I have to restart the Apache server each time this particular computer tries to connect to clockingit (even from a VM
installed on that computer)

Empty Report, Log more work!

I seem to be strugling with reports. One client seems okay... however all other clients will not run reports.

Everytime - every configuration "any project" "any user" "pivot" workload etc...

I run report and get the warning "empty report, Log more work!"

Any advice? Am I doing something wrong?

Workflow Automation

Hi,

I really like ClockingIt and have used it in the past for some projects very successfully.

For a new project I wonder if it is possible to extend clockingit to act more as a workflow management/task distribution system. I understand that this is not out of the box and I would be willing to add development resources to extend the current code base, but of course this only makes sense if my idea is in the general direction of the roadmap.

Specifically I would like to cover a workflow like this

- Create Project (with multiple tasks in a sequence)
- Notification for user1 that task1 has been assigned
- Have user1 complete task1
- Once task1 is completed, assign task2 to user2 automatically
- Notification for user2 that task2 has been assigned
- Have user2 complete task2
- Once task2 is completed, assign task3 to user3 automatically
- and so on until all project tasks have been completed

Is something like this feasible with Clockinit or would it be better to use another workflow tool for this?

Your input is appreciated.

API for developping a time tracking widget linked with ClockingIT ?

Hi,

I just got into ClockingIT, after a bit of research, looking for a free web-based solution for project and task planning. This sounds like there are a ton of software to do that, but it is not when you're looking for a good time tracking feature. I love that feature in Clocking IT!

Moreover, I love the whole software and i think the developer(s) is(are) doing a great job!! :)

However, i am looking for a dashbord OSX widget to track my time easily on the different tasks, without the need of opening a new tab in firefox each time, or keeping Clocking IT open. Is there an existing software that allows me to do that? Is there a web-based window that can be dedicated to this Clocking IT feature (like a window with just a select box with projects and tasks, and a start/stop button for time tracking) ?

If not, i would gladly have a try to develop such a feature.. is there an API or a way to template Clocking IT ? In fact, it is not a new feature, it is more about design - a simple page with only tasks, maybe with automatic time stop/start upon selection.

There is a OSX widget that can handle a web page (URL) and display it as a widget in the dashbord, maybe it is the easyiest way to achieve this.

Thinking about a more advanced feature, we could use google gears to get this working offline also, to track time even without internet connection... why not ;)

CSV File and dates

Hi, we are just starting to use Clocking IT and I really like it - especially how you can quickly add tasks.

Anyway, once I have all my tasks added for a project, I export a CSV file to send to my sales people. Right now it is putting the wrong due dates for tasks. For example, one of my task is due on Friday, August 13 and it shows it correctly on the Clocking IT website. But when I export that info to a csv file, it shows that due date as Saturday, August 14th.

Any idea on why this is happening?

How can I update from old repository to github version? Is it even possible?

Hi, you all.

Few months ago, I installed the old version of CIT (repo.clockingit.com). Lots of data were added to the system, but some features didn't worked so well (as some reports, for instance). So now I'm trying to "upgrade" it to github version (keeping the same database of course), but I didn't saw any instruction/mention about this in the README files neither other documentations. I've already googled and searched in this forum (don't know if I used proper keywords) and nothing seems to help. Is it possible (and by possible I'm not saying "creating and population all new database structures manually" Oo, unless its REEEEEEALLY necessary.) O_o Can anybody help?

I have read about the add earlier work-Button, but I cannot find it. I have open a task and alternatively I have generated a new task, but there is no such button.

Many of our projects are very similar in nature (telephone system installs), and there are many tasks that are common to every project.

Is there a way to create templates or boilerplate that can be copied or becomes the default for new projects? This would save time entering all these tasks manually each time a new project is created.

Is there a way to prioritize tasks with a # value instead of high, medium, low etc? For instance I have setup 15 tasks and I want them to be done in a certain order on the Task list 1 - 15. I also want to be able to change the order of those tasks at anytime. For instance task 14 became a High priority. I would then change the # of that task to like 3 in the que. Is this possible?
